Therapies and Treatments for Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis occurs from a condition called diverticulosis. Diverticulosis is bulging abnormal pouch like structures present in the intestine. These pouch like structures occur mostly on the colon. Many people having diverticulosis may not even know it for all their life. When the walls of these pouches get inflamed and infected, then it is called diverticulitis. Although diverticulitis is seemingly harmless, a more complex case of recurring diverticulitis may even call for operation.
When the symptoms are less severe then Diverticulitis can be treated by taking rest at home. A few days of rest along with some antibiotics and diet regulation can cure diverticulitis within 4-5 days. One has to keep in mind that the food taken is low on fiber content and is semi liquid or li1quid. This exerts less pressure on the digestive system and gives the colon a chance to rest. However, when the condition is more serious and the patient is experiencing vomiting and high fever, he has to be hospitalized. In the hospital the patient is given intravenous antibiotics. The patient stays in the hospital till the vomiting stops and the fever subsides and there are no risks of any other complications.
When the attack of the diverticulitis is recurring the doctors may consider doing a surgery to remove the affected part of the colon. There are two types' of surgeries done to treat diverticulitis - primary bowel resection and primary bowel resection with colostomy.
Primary bowel resection: primary bowel resection is also known as segmental resection. In this surgery, the affected part of the colon is removed. After removing the diseased part, the healthy parts of the intestine are reconnected. This helps in stopping the disease to be spread. It also enables the patient to have unobstructed and painless bowel passing. The method of the surgery depends upon the condition and the severity of the symptoms of the patient. The doctor may consider doing a traditional surgery or a laparoscopic surgery.
Primary bowel resection with colostomy: sometimes the inflammation is so much that it is almost impossible to remove the diseased part of the intestine and join the colon. In such cases the doctors perform colostomy. In colostomy first an opening or a cavity is made in the walls of the abdominal. The colon is made to pass through this cavity and the waste is collected in the bag. Once the inflammation heals, the doctors may perform the primary bowel resection. However colostomy in some cases may be permanent also.
