What is The Principle of Diverticulitis?
- By:Fadhrick Pickaso
Diverticulitis occurs from a condition called diverticulosis. Diverticulosis is the small and bulging abnormal pouches most of the time found in the colon. When these pouches gets infected and inflamed the condition is called diverticulitis. Though diverticulitis can be treated very easily most of the times, the pain that accompanies the disease is quite excruciating.
Diverticulitis is mainly result of the old age. One can also get infected by diverticulitis if they have had prior attacks of the disease. If one has diverticulosis for a long time then there are also high risks of diverticulitis. Although most of the times diverticula forms in the colon, any part of the intestine can be get affected by it. These bulging sack like structures can get infected and start attracting immune cells anytime. However, the risk of the diverticula getting infected is much higher when one is above the age of 40. Diverticula get infected when the stool gets trapped in them. This causes inflammation of these pouches. The most common symptom of diverticulitis is fever and agonizing pain. One can also experience tenderness in the abdominal area. Diverticulitis can be easily cured most of the times by taking a soft and liquid diet and appropriate rest. Coupled with some antibiotics, bed rest and low fiber diet can clear up diverticulitis in around one week. Someone suffering from diverticulitis should compulsorily avoid any food item that needs a lot of chewing and is difficult to digest so that the colon gets some rest. Once the disease is cured one should gradually increase the fiber content in the food. A lot of fruits, vegetables and nuts are a must eat for someone who has suffered from diverticulitis. One should also drink plenty of fluid so that the stool is bulky and soft. Constipation should be avoided at any cost. A recurring case of diverticulitis may be more dangerous than the first attack.
It is very difficult to diagnose whether one has diverticulosis or not. Sometimes people can lead all their life without even knowing that they have diverticulosis. People having diverticulosis can anytime have diverticulitis so it is always best to take precautionary measures to avoid the disease. It is advised that one takes a lot of fiber in their diet. One should also make a point to drink a lot of fluid. This makes the excretion process quite smooth and reduces the risk of constipation and the stool getting trapped in the diverticulosis.
