Smoke and Mirrors: Why Americans Pay More for Their Rx
- By:Greg Edwards
America is the most sophisticated nation in the world. Other civilizations look at our nation as a model in which to base their countries on. Millions of people flock to America from other nations to enjoy the freedoms that our country offers. But when it comes to the price of personal healthcare, we have the highest prices in the world. Have you ever wondered if the drug companies and the government are really telling us the truth, or is it all smoke and mirrors?
There are several simple steps that the government could take that would easily lower our everyday healthcare cost. The simplest solution would be to allow importation of drugs from Canada. The government continues to populate lists of irrational reasons not to allow the importation of Canadian drugs into America. Here are a few of the reasons that the government gives to not allowing the importation of Canadian drugs:
• Loss of jobs
The government claims that there would be a significant loss of jobs if they allowed drug importation from Canada. However, more than 50% of the drug companies are already located in Canada. On top of that, the drug companies in America would likely not take much of a hit because they would have to lower there price in response. This would increase the money in the pockets of the middle class American working man which in turn would increase the amount of spending, stimulating the American economy to grow and produce more jobs.
• Terrorism Threat
Another reason the government gives is that it would allow another avenue for terrorism. This excuse is bogus because millions of Americans already import drugs from Canada each year. In fact, the number has grown so large that the FDA has decided to “look over” the importation of drugs from Canada. The FDA has put guidelines on their website on how to order drugs safely from Canada. If the terrorists wanted to poison us through our prescription medication that comes from Canada don’t you think they could do it whether the government declares it legal or not?
• Safety Concerns
The FDA states that they cannot guarantee the safety of drugs sold in Canada. Can the FDA guarantee the safety of drugs sold here? Canada has almost the same safety regulations and system that we use here in the United States. Most of the drugs sold in Canada come from the same source as drugs sold on American drugstore shelves. The FDA says that they cannot guarantee the safety of the drugs sold in Canada but then overlook the importation anyway. If the FDA is so concerned about safety issues of importing drugs from Canada, why do they continue to allow it?
It is simple, the government, the FDA, and the American drug companies are in it for the money. They don’t care about the strain they put on the American working class, they just want to make sure that they keep their stranglehold on the American drug market. The alternative? If the government will keep looking over it, keep ordering your prescription medication from foreign pharmacies.
