Understanding diamond microdermabrasion
- By:andre depayens
Diamond microdermabrasion is increasingly becoming the treatment of choice for both skin patients and clinics. Traditional microdermabrasion machines rely on crystals to exfoliate the skin, whereas diamond microdermabrasion machines can produce similar results to crystal machines, without any of the drawbacks associated with crystals.
Microdermabrasion crystals are a subject of controversy as many treatment providers claim that they are responsible for side effects including itchy eyes and respiratory problems. Because diamond microdermabrasion is crystal-free it carries none of these potential side effects.
One risk associated with crystals is that they can sometimes get stuck inside skin pores and it can be irritating trying to get them out. Because diamond microdermabrasion doesn’t use crystals there is no risk of this happening.
Diamond microdermabrasion works using a tip that comes into contact with the skin. This tip is covered is thousands of tiny diamond particles, which are the hardest substance known to man, and are very good at abrading against the skin. This causes exfoliation of the top layer of the skin and dead skin cells are then sucked away from the surface of the skin.
Diamond microdermabrasion offers are great degree of customization based on the needs of the patient. The strength of treatment can be adjusted by using tips with diamond chips of different sizes. Larger sized diamond chips are used to perform strong exfoliation jobs while more sensitive skin areas need finer diamond tips. A diamond microdermabrasion machine can come with up to nine different diamond tips.
Because diamond tips are re usable, this means they are cheaper to maintain as there is no need for a fresh supply of crystals for every treatment. However, great care should be taken when sterilizing diamond microdermabrasion tips between uses. This should be done in steam, alcohol and UV light. A diamond tip that isn’t properly sterilized between uses runs the risk of spreading bacteria from one patient to another.
Diamond microdermabrasion produces very similar results to crystal microdermabrasion. They both take about 30 minutes to complete a single treatment and a series of several treatments is needed to get good long lasting results. The cost of diamond microdermabrasion for the consumer is also the same as crystal based treatment.
