Diet pills: still a long way to go
- By:Jenifer d'souze
The market for weight loss is huge. Pharmaceutical companies are in a run to launch new diet pills which can give them market share and big revenues. There are plenty of diet pills already in the market- Phentermine, Adipex, Didrex, Xenical, Meridia and the latest is the launch of Acomplia in the European countries.
All these are prescription diet pills and cannot be taken unless the doctor advices. Most of them come with serious side effects and diet pills like Phentermine, Adipex, and Didrex cannot be taken for a long period of time. The two medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term weight loss is sibutramine (Meridia) and orlistat (Xenical). Acomplia is still awaiting approval from US FDA.
Managing weight can be frustrating, and sometimes one needs a little extra support. But diet pills alone cannot be a support. To succeed and ensure that weight lost does not come back one need to change ones lifestyle and eating habits.
Acomplia:
It is the latest drug in the large gamut of diet pills. It is considered to be useful for long term treatment of obesity. Acomplia works by blocking the CB1 receptor, one of the two receptors found in a newly described physiological system called the Endocannabinoid System (EC system), believed to play a critical role in the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure.
Phentermine:
It is one of the oldest and the most commonly prescribed weight loss diet pill. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant. Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brains) and increases heart rate and blood pressure and decreases appetite. Phentermine decreases appetite by possibly changing brain levels of serotonin. Phentermine is a nervous system stimulator like the amphetamines, causing stimulation, elevation of blood pressure, and faster heart rate.
Xenical:
Unlike other weight-loss drugs that act in the brain or central nervous system to suppress appetite or to speed up metabolism, Xenical works in the digestive system to block the fat (about one-third) in the food from being digested.
Enzymes in the digestive system, called lipases, helps digest (or break down) fat. When taken with meals, Xenical attaches to the lipases and blocks them from breaking down the fat. The undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated in the bowel movements. Xenical thus helps block the fat from being absorbed by the body.
Meridia:
Meridia is a class of drug known as monoamine (serotonin and nor epinephrine) re-uptake inhibitors. Serotonin is a chemical released in the brain which makes you feel full. Meridia acts to inhibit the re absorption of serotonin, thus giving the sensation of being full for a longer period of time. This method is thought to effectively reduce the caloric intake of an obese individual due to appetite suppression.About the author:
