Chickenpox is a problem that mostly occurs in children. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and it usually behaves like a mild disease. More complex problems might occur in teenagers, adults or persons with a weakened immune system.

In the first phase, right after catching the virus, the affected persons develop symptoms such as fever, aches and pain, headache and loss of appetite. In a few days after these symptoms occur, the rash will be appearing. The occurred blisters filled with cleared fluid will become very itchy. In a few days the fluid will become cloudy, the blisters will break and a crust or scab forms while the skin heals.

This problem usually lasts for 10 days. The problem is the consequence of the varicella virus that spreads easily through air. Spreading through air is the first possibility of spreading chickenpox. The second way of spreading the disease is to touch the fluid from the chickenpox blisters. A pregnant woman can also spread the virus to her unborn baby and also to her newborn ones. Another possibility of catching chickenpox is by touching fluid from the shingles blisters. People with shingles might spread the virus that leads to chickenpox for up to seven days after the blisters appear.

It is good to know that persons with chickenpox can spread the virus to others up to five days before the rash occurs and until five days after the rash appears. This condition is highly contagious especially in the first day before the rash appears and the first few days after it occurs.

In order to prevent a mass spreading of the virus it is recommended that the affected children to be kept away from daycare or school until five days after the rash occurs. If your child is exposed to chicken pox you should watch carefully for its symptoms because it usually takes two to three weeks from the time there is contact with the virus until the person gets sick.

The complications that may result from chickenpox might include bacterial infections of the skin for the adult and young persons. These infections might occur after scratching the chickenpox rash. There were registered cases of death that was caused of these infections.

Other complications may occur in babies that develop chickenpox. The possible complications are birth defects, pneumonia and other organ problems.

People that are older than 13 years, pregnant women, newborn infants and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe problems.
