Diverticulitis in most of the cases can be cured with a proper diet regulation. Mild attacks of diverticulitis can be treated easily by prescribing a lot of rest coupled with diet control and antibiotics. When the attack of the Diverticulitis is for the first time and is mild in nature the doctors prescribe a lot of fluid intake and low fiber diet. This is done so that there is not much pressure on the colon and it gets rest so that the infection can heal.
The most important liquid that is prescribed by the doctors when someone is suffering from diverticulitis is plain water. It is very essential to drink a lot of water to ensure healthy metabolism. One should also drink a lot of fruit juices. The fruit juice should however be without the pulp. Broth ands soups as well as gelatin are also suggested as Diverticulitis Diets liquid which can be taken are popsicles and tea or coffee. However the popsicles should be without any tad of fruits or pulps of fruits and the tea or coffee without any cream.
The food intake should be of low fiber. Low fiber diet can include white bread, white rice, pasta, noodles, and macaroni. One can also eat cereals of low fiber content. Raw fruits as well as canned or cooked fruits can also be eaten. However, the seed, skin or the membrane of the fruit should not be consumed. Similarly vegetables without seeds, skins or outer coverings can also be consumed. Along with the above stated food items one can also eat fish, eggs and peanut butter, milk and yoghurt without nuts and seeds and desserts which do not have seeds and nuts.
Once there is a relief from the pain and other vital symptoms of diverticulitis which generally does not take more than a week, the fiber content in the diet can be slowly and gradually increased. By adding around 5 to 15 grams of fiber in the diet each day one can ensure adjustment of the digestive system to high intake of fiber later.
As prevention from diverticulitis one should always have high fiber content in the food. Ideally the fiber content in the diet should range from 25 to 30 grams each day. Along with high fiber one should also drink lot of water and other fluids. This helps in softening the high fiber intake which otherwise can be constipatingAbout the author:
