It is well known that normal urine is sterile. It contains fluids, salts or waste products but no bacteria, viruses or fungi. The bladder infection occurs when microorganisms occur at the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply. This condition is also known as cystitis. Statistics say that women are more prone to develop bladder infection. The reason is the urethra which is not as long as in men and that is why bacteria can reach easier to the bladder to cause infection. It is also good to know that even if they occur more frequently in women, these infections may cause severe problems in men too.
For men, the main reason for bladder infections is an enlarged prostate. When the size of the prostate increases, problems such as improper bladder emptying may occur. In these cases, small amounts of urine are left in the bladder consisting into a perfect environment for bacterial infection. As we said, this is the main reason for men over 50 to be affected by these problems. Along with this problem, other causes might lead to bladder infection. Among them we have to remember kidney stones, unprotected anal sex, a weak immune system or the placement of a catheter.

Unprotected anal sex can also lead to infections because the urethra is exposed during the sexual act to the bacteria from the bowel. These bacteria can cause problems for other parts of the body even if we know that are harmless for the bowel.
More than that, a weak immune system can also contribute to the occurrence of many types of infections such as bladder infections. The most common examples are persons which suffer of diabetes, AIDS or persons that take chemotherapy.
A catheter might also increase the risk for bladder infections.
The symptoms that are seen in this condition include frequent and urgent need to urinate, passing only small amounts of urine, pain in the abdomen, pelvic area or lower back, burning sensations while urinating, leaking, cloudy and bad-smelling urine, blood in the urine or low grade fever.
Treatment is usually the same for both men and women. Doctors recommend for this condition the oral antibiotics. The treatment durability depends on the problems that occurs and might last from 7 to 14 days. Even if you begin to feel better after only a few days you should respect the doctor’s order, otherwise the infection will reoccur.About the author:
