Non pharmaceutical healing techniques for chronic pain
- By:Rick Martin
Pain is a fact of human life and many techniques and methods have been developed over the years to help the chronic pain suffer gain relief not only from the immediate sensation of pain, but also from the debilitating secondary effects of pain on the effective operation of all of the bodily systems. Healing the cause of the pain is the obvious premier option, but sometimes that is a difficult or lengthy process.
The principles of holistic health state that the operation of each body part and body system is both positively and negatively affected by each other system. For example a minor bump or bruise on the bottom of the foot can not only hurt at the site of the injury, but the location of the nerve endings around the injury will affect other bodily systems such as the liver, stomach or lungs.
In addition, holistic health principles state that by favoring the painful area, the posture is affected negatively, creating undue stress on the spine. This can lead to poor spine and hip alignment causing pain both at the vertebrae and in the muscles that support and surround the spine.
When the spinal column is compromised it can, in turn, cause circulation of blood and lymph systems to shut down to the area both at the site of the injury and in the misaligned vertebra area. Poor circulation not only affects muscles and tissue systems, but other bodily systems such as digestion, breathing and lymph systems.
So, it can be seen that pain causes negative effects on holistic health systems throughout the body. In order to treat the person with chronic pain without resorting to pharmaceutical overload, the body should be helped to provide healing for itself. Increasing the intake of water is a simple remedy, considered one of the oldest and simplest holistic health practices to be used. Hydrating the tissues, lymph systems and even hard body tissue such as bones, cartilage and teeth is of proven benefit for healing.
Another major technique for relief of pain without the use of pharmaceutical remedies is proper alignment of the skeletal framework of the body. Poor posture can cause not only direct pain at the spinal column, but can negatively affect the functioning of the other body systems such as the circulatory and lymphatic system. The digestive system that is malfunctioning and causing ulcer pain, for example may be due to stress caused by poor posture with nerve endings being compromised by improper alignment.
There is no doubt that emotional upsets can cause pain in various other bodily sites. Anyone who has ever been victim of a stress headache will better understand the link between the holistic health of the mind and the healing of the body. The important aspect of healing chronic pain is to understand your body better. A practitioner who is trained in pain management can often be of great assistance in teaching techniques for you. The actual work must be done by the sufferer, but you can also gain helpful information on how to apply the knowledge that you are given.
