Right Way to Treat Diverticulitis
- By:Fadhrick Pickaso
The treatment of diverticulitis depends up on the seriousness of the condition of the patient. The treatment also depends on the fact that whether the attack is for the first time or it is recurring. Although medication can cure diverticulitis, when the symptoms are more severe it calls for surgery. By surgery the affected part is removed so that the disease does not affect further.
Diverticulitis at its primary stage, where the symptoms are not that strong, can be cured by taking bed rest in the home. Giving a little break to the rigorous everyday schedule and a bit of diet regulation can easily cure diverticulitis. The patients are prescribed antibiotics to fight the bacteria. It is also strictly recommended that the patient does not eat any high fiber content food. For this he need to avoid eating vegetables, fruits and whole grains which have high fiber content. This ensures that the there is not much pressure exerted on the colon and it gets time to recover. The patients are required to eat a semi liquid and liquid diet so that they do not have to chew much and the digestion is also done easily. Most of the times this procedure helps the patient heal in about 3-4 days. After the condition is a bit stable the patient should gradually increase the amount of fiber in the food so that the disease does not recur. He also has to ensure that there is a lot of water intake to avoid constipation which would in turn put a lot of pressure in the colon causing it to get inflamed and infected again.
If the condition does not improve by taking home rest and the patient experiences vomiting and fever, he has to be hospitalized. One can also be hospitalized if there is any problem in passing the bowel and the number of WBC increases to avoid further complications. The patient is given antibiotics in the form of intravenous. A patient can also be admitted to the hospital if the doctors consider that there is any risk for peritonitis.
If the Diverticulitis symptoms are more severe and is recurring in nature then the doctors may consider operating on the diseased part of the colon. There are two types of surgery done i.e. primary bowel resection and primary bowel resection with colostomy depending upon the seriousness of the condition. The surgery ensures that the patient has least chances of again suffering with diverticulitis and it also helps to subside the agonizing pain.
