Urinary tract infection treatments

Urinary tract infections are common among especially in women of ages between 20 and 50. Also known as UTI these infections are not as severe as they seem. It was proved that urinary tract infections are treatable conditions that can be cured with the help of antibacterial drugs. It is recommended to respect the doctor’s indications because he will prescribe a treatment that is related to the patient’s history and comes as a consequence of the urine tests that identify the offending bacteria. Sensitivity test is one of the tests that can help the doctor in prescribing the proper treatment. In many cases, for uncomplicated infections, doctors usually prescribe treatments such as trimethoprim (Trimpex), trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrim), amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin), or ampicillin. Recent approved drugs are also recommended. Among them we have to remember ofloxacin (Floxin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and trovafloxin (Trovan).

It is known that urinary tract infections can be cured in 1 or 2 days of treatment if it isn’t a complicated condition, especially related to obstruction or nervous system disorder.

Even so, many doctors advice their patients to take antibiotics for more than a week, sometimes even two, to be sure that the infection is cured. Single-dose treatment is not recommended for some patients, especially for those with who have delayed treatment, kidney infections, diabetes or structural abnormalities or prostate infections. Long-time treatments are also necessary for patients infected because of Mycoplasma or Chlamydia. For these conditions tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ) or doxycyline are usually prescribed. After treatment a urinalysis is helpful because it proves that the infection is gone or not. Another medical advice is to take the whole treatment even if the symptoms disappear. It was proved that they disappear before the infection is cleared.

In severe cases, such as kidney infections, hospitalization is required until the patients are able to take the medicines on their own. The treatment usually lasts several weeks. It was also proved that this condition does not lead to kidney damage or failure unless it goes untreated.

Most doctors sustain that home remedies might also help. Plenty of water drinking is believed to help in cleaning the urinary tract of bacteria. It is also recommended to avoid coffee, alcohol and spicy foods. It is also good to know that smoking is considered the main cause of bladder cancer.

Women that have developed urinal tract infections for three times are prone to develop it again. 80 percent of these women will develop another similar problem within 18 months from the last urinary tract infection. In this case they should ask their doctor for some advices. They might need a TMP/SMZ treatment for at least 6 months. Doctors also recommend a single dose of antibiotic after sexual intercourse and a short course of antibiotics when symptoms appear.
