Plus Size Fashion Tips For You

By:Eric Menzies Menzies

There are now many designers that are designing clothing that is flattering for the plus size woman. For many years it was next to impossible for the plus size woman to find a great dress for a special occasion. Mostly, all they had to choose from was a floral print sack, or a tent like black dress that was supposed to hide their size. Imagine going to a special occasion like a prom, wedding, dance or a party in that kind of dress. There is a lot more to choose from today, but you must still take into consideration your body type before deciding which is the best purchase.

Plus size women generally come in one of three basic shapes: apple, hourglass, or pear. Apple shaped women carry their weight mostly around their abdomen, and have little different between waist and bust measurements. Pear shaped women carry most of their weight in the hips and thighs, and hourglass shapes distribute the weight about evenly between the bust and hips, and have a larger difference between their bust and waist measurements. Wearing a dress suited to a type that you're not could mean that it's too tight in one place, and way too loose in another.

Remember you should choose a size that is a good fit to your body and its measurements, and not the number you think you are. Dressmakers have clothing that is so varied that the size number is almost irrelevant. Look into structured undergarments that are designed to smooth out the body line under the dress. These garments prevent lumps that distort the line and appearance of the dress.

Larger women have been brainwashed to believe that they can only wear black, if they want to look thinner. Black is fine for some women, but others miss bright colors. Also, If you are trying to fade into the background, black is definitely the wrong choice. Don't let anyone tell you what you should wear. Wear what you like, no matter what the color. You don't want to look like you are attending a funeral. However, it is important to check yourself out before you leave. Make sure the colors you choose don't clash.

Be sure to try on all clothes before purchase, preferably together, including the shoes and underwear you will be wearing with the dress. This way you will know exactly what you will look like, with no suprises. Changing your bra, or shoes, or anything else can completely alter the look of the dress.

Lastly, do not discount the value of a good seamstress. If an outfit needs only one or two small adjustments, a tailor could make it into the outfit you were searching for. Fashion is created for the ideal body which most of the population does not possess. Take the stand to make your ideal outfit your own.
